Place Based Cultural Learning
Mala`ai embraces the place-based, culture-based, standards-based education model. The power of place based education relies on using place as the jumping board for new lessons. The students relate, engage, and are motivated to learn more, because they can make the direct connection to their own lives and communities. Mala`ai is partnered with Waimea Middle School’s `Ike Hawai`i program, (Hawaiian cultural knowledge) to tie in relevant Hawaiian cultural studies with garden curriculum. This collaboration provides students with:
Cultural learning lessons focused on values, knowledge and skills integrated into curriculum in core and extended classes.
Integration of key `Ike Hawai`i values as part of classroom rules and team building.
Family and community based `Ike Hawai`i learning opportunities.
School-wide cultural service learning projects connected to the community.
Cultural lessons utilizing technology application as part of a student’s learning experience.
Cultural professional development sessions for teachers, community, and families.
